This segment of Ferndale Avenue from Park Avenue to Herndon Parkway has a history of traffic calming and design requests beginning prior to 2020. There is also a history of both angle and side-swipe crashes along the corridor. This project will re-evaluate the roadway configuration to include marked parking lanes and curb extensions at several intersections.

 Anticipated Project Benefits:
• Increases sight distance for cars and pedestrians
• Adds new, marked, shorter pedestrian crosswalks
• Clearly marks travel lane and center line
• Reduces impermeable surface area/adds green space

The community was invited to join town staff on Thursday, June 13, 2024 to explore the this project along with Park Avenue/Monroe Street and share their thoughts with us to help shape the direction of our initiative as we work toward making improvements.

As a follow up to the meeting, we have compiled a summary of comments received during the meeting, along with the PowerPoint that was presented.

  • In August 2024 town staff developed an interim roadway striping plan to deploy immediate-term modifications to Ferndale Avenue. These markings are consistent with the long-term plan and will aid to improve sight distance. Striping will be deployed in October 2024 as weather permits.
  • Long-term design is underway and will incorporate observations and findings from the striping improvements following an observation period in 2025.
