Herndon's Comprehensive Plan is a long range planning document that establishes the direction and framework of present and future land use activities, policies, initiatives, and decisions in Herndon. It is general in nature and principally intended to promote the health, safety, and welfare of Town residents and businesses. The Comprehensive Plan is reviewed for updates at least once every five years and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan occasionally occur.

Raise Grant Award
The Town of Herndon was awarded a $720,000 grant through the Department of Transportation to assist with the development of plan to redevelop the town's land use and development policies, transportation network parity and enhancement, and economic housing development policies. This money will assist the town as it looks forward to updating its comprehensive plan for 2050.
Herndon is in the preliminary stages of launching the HERNDON 2050 PLAN, which will replace the existing comprehensive plan. The request for proposals for this plan is expected to be published in 2024. The Town anticipates a multi-year public-facing plan development process. Check back here for updates on this project.
Transit-Related Growth Area (TRG) Small Area Plan
The Transit Related Growth (TRG) Area , shown in the map below, has undergone a small area planning effort. The plan establishes a vision for redevelopment and refreshing of the TRG with mixed land uses, potentially higher densities, new transportation connections and open spaces, and thoughtful urban design appropriate for its adjacency to the Herndon Metrorail Station.
The Town has finalized the TRG Small Area Plan, and final approval from the Town Council has occurred. You can find the finalized plan documents at the link above.
