There are several steps to the Herndon Police Department's hiring process and they typically take several months to complete.  Applicants must successfully complete the following components of the selection process to be considered for hire:

• Written Examination - 4 hours
• Initial Interview - 1 hour
• Fingerprinting
• Physical Abilities Test - 3 hours
• Oral Review Board - 1 hour
• Polygraph Examination - 4 hours
• Medical Examination - 4 hours
• Psychological Examination - 8 hours
• Background Examination 8 - 12 weeks
• Interview with the Chief of Police

• U. S. Citizen
• Uncorrected vision with glasses not worse than 20/100 in either eye.  Corrective soft contact lenses may be worn.  Uncorrected vision with soft contacts must be no worse than 20/200.  Must demonstrate successful long term wear of lenses of 6 months minimum for pre-employment examination.  Vision must be correctable to 20/20.
• Be 21 years of age at date of appointment.
• High school graduate or possess a valid G.E.D. certificate recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Possess or can acquire a valid Virginia Operator's License at time of appointment.
• Illegal drug use will be reviewed with respect to recent use, type of drug, and frequency of use.
• Never been involved in, committed, or convicted of  a felony or serious misdemeanor.  Involvement in past criminal activity will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
• Be of good character and reputation.
• Ability to perform essential job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation.
• Stable work record.

Herndon Police Department recognizes the value of certain skills police candidates can bring to the department. Advance pay steps are given to newly hired Police Officer 1 candidates who meet the below criteria. 

Military Experience (Active or Reserve)

• Must fulfill entire term and be honorably discharged. 5% increase above starting salary given.

 Spanish Language Proficiency (oral)

• Achieve a level 9 or higher on the oral Language Proficiency Test. 5% increase above starting salary given.

 Education

• Bachelor's degree from accredited institution. No credit for associate degree. No additional credit for degrees beyond bachelors. 2.5% increase above starting salary given.

Certified Law Enforcement Experience

Sworn officers coming from an agency with primary law enforcement responsibility will be eligible to join Herndon Police Department at an elevated rank and may earn advanced pay steps. All advanced steps shall not exceed 20% above the minimum starting pay of the relevant rank. Chief of Police and Director of HR reserve the right to determine advanced pay step eligibility.
