Most signs displayed within the Town of Herndon require either review board or administrative approval.  This page is designed to assist business owners in understanding the regulations and processes for installing signs in Town.

The Zoning Ordinance contains the signage regulations governing sign size and location and also lists signs that are exempt from receiving any Town approvals.

Uniform Sign Standards

On March 15, 2023 both the Architectural Review Board and the Historic District Review Board approved the adoption of the Uniform Sign Standards within their respective control districts.  Adherence to the sign standards, as determined by staff, is required to receive administrative sign approval.  If the standards are not met, administrative approval cannot be granted.  The applicant can then choose to pursue a HDRB or ARB application for the non-compliant sign.

Administrative Sign Approvals

Signs Under a Master Sign Plan and Temporary Signs can receive approval through an administrative process.

Review Board Sign Approvals

Freestanding signage a typically requires review board approval, as well as wall and window signage that does not comply with the Uniform Sign Standards for the Town of Herndon.  These types of signs must have their applications heard by the Architectural Review Board or the Historic District Review Board if the business is within the Historic District.

For many permanent signs, sign permits issued through the Building Official are also required.

All sign applications are available on the Forms & Fees page.
