What is Urban Forestry?

Urban forestry involves the management, conservation, and sustainable development of trees and green spaces within our Town limits. This encompasses tree planting, maintenance, and removal, as well as education and community engagement to promote a culture of environmental stewardship. Trees play a significant role in improving our urban living spaces, such as reducing urban heat island effect, improving air/water quality, and capturing carbon from the atmosphere.

Our Mission

Urban and community forestry is an integral part of sustainable living that brings many environmental, economic, social, and health benefits to our communities. Herndon is committed to maintaining and expanding our urban forest through sustainable management practices, community partnerships, and thoughtful urban planning.

The Town’s Urban Forestry Program is managed by the Town Arborist, Nick Maletta, who is an ISA Certified Arborist. His responsibilities are:

  • To expand our urban forest, promoting a healthier and more resilient community
  • To mitigate the risk of tree related hazards
  • Review landscape plans and protect existing trees during development
  • Provide citizens with educational information and advice on the protection of trees against pests and diseases
  • To create an aesthetically pleasing environment that enhances the quality of life for all residents
  • To reduce the urban heat island effect and mitigate the impacts of climate change
  • To provide habitat for wildlife and support biodiversity in the Town

Our Services

  1. Tree Planting and Care: We facilitate the planting of trees on public property and provide guidance on proper care for residents to maintain healthy trees on their private properties.
  2. Tree Maintenance: Our Town Arborist regularly inspects and maintains public trees to ensure their health and mitigate risk.
  3. Tree Removal and Replacement: In cases where tree removal is necessary due to safety concerns or disease, the Town Arborist will coordinate the removal of hazardous trees. We follow a responsible process to replace these trees in suitable locations.
  4. Tree Preservation and Protection: We enforce best practices during development projects to safeguard significant trees from damage and ensure development projects are in accordance with the town’s landscaping requirements.

Get Involved!

We believe that community involvement is crucial for the success of our urban forests. There are several ways you can contribute:
