The Building Inspection section has incorporated programs to ensure the health and  safety of its citizens.   

Rental Inspection Program

The Herndon Town Council has adopted Ordinance 07-0-19 allowing the Department of Public Works, Building Inspection Section to develop and enforce a Rental Inspection Program.  This program adopts specific residential districts to perform Building Code Compliance Inspections on rental units.  The purpose of this program is to “protect the public health, safety, and welfare of the occupants of dwelling units inside the designated district.”  The Town of Herndon's Rental Inspection Program ensures that rental properties are maintained in a safe and sanitary manner. All rental properties within the rental districts are required to be inspected by Town of Herndon Staff. Properties are checked for violations of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code as well as adherence to town codes, including occupancy requirements. Current Districts: Branch Drive, Courts of Chandon, Dulles Park Townhomes, Park Avenue Square, Tralee, and Waterford Park. For more information please email: buildinginspections@herndon-va.gov 

Neighborhood Inspection Program

The NIP program places the Neighborhood Building Inspector in a neighborhood to perform systematic inspections. The Inspector walks the neighborhood noting building code violations and makes referrals to the appropriate agencies for issues that are not building code related. The goals of the NIP program are to Preserve and enhance residential neighborhoods through intensified, proactive code enforcement and neighborhood outreach Work with residents to gain voluntary compliance and provide assistance and resources as available to facilitate compliance Foster a greater awareness of Town Codes and appreciation for neighborhood improvement in a manner that promotes collaboration and cooperation between Town staff and Town residents. Backflow and Cross Connection Program

Preserve and enhance residential neighborhoods through intensified, proactive code enforcement and neighborhood outreach. Work with residents to gain voluntary compliance and provide assistance and resources as available to facilitate compliance. Foster a greater awareness of Town Codes and appreciation for neighborhood improvement, a manner that promotes collaboration and cooperation between Town staff and Town residents. The backflow program exists within the town In order to comply with the Herndon Town Code, Article III, Chapter 74, Division 4 and Virginia Waterworks. Backflow devices within the Town of Herndon, including irrigation systems, are required to have an annual test by a certified backflow tester. Testers must use the backflow test report form and return to: buildinginspections@herndon-va.gov
