Property owners often need the service of a professional tree care company for consultation, trimming or removal. Selecting a professional tree care company is very similar to the way you would select any home maintenance contractor.

You should obtain the following information to ensure that you are hiring a professional.

Confirm that they employ professional ISA Certified Arborists.  An arborist is a specialist in the care of individual trees.  A certified arborist is an experienced professional who has passed an extensive examination covering all aspects of tree care and maintenance.

  • Ask for proof of insurance. This not only covers you and your home but also the company and their employees.
  • Confirm that they are bonded.  This protects you.
  • Ask for references.
  • Obtain more than one quote - preferably no fewer than 3 quotes.
  • Read over the proposed work contracts to make certain that the language describes what the work you expect the company to perform.
  • Please be wary of companies and individuals that come door to door looking for work.  Always check for proper credentials and insurance.
  • Good arborists will only perform accepted and safe practices. A company performing improper tree care can cause more harm than good to your valuable trees and your property.
  • Get everything in writing, read carefully and don't be afraid to ask questions!

If you take care of your trees, they will help take care of you.  Your trees are valuable assets -- protect them.
