The current configuration of Herndon Parkway public right-of-way, providing access to 465 Herndon Parkway, 459 Herndon Parkway and the Sunset Business Park, provides challenges to drivers of large delivery trucks trying to access businesses.  In addition, some passenger vehicle drivers have attempted to bypass the roundabout and turn into the opposing vehicle lanes.  With the future closing of the Spring Street median at the Spring Street entrance to the Sunset Business Park, those who formerly used the median break to access the business park, will be relying on the Herndon Parkway access point to enter or exist the Business Park. 

To resolve current issues and accommodate future increases in use, the Town obtained a preliminary conceptual design of a redesigned roadway using funds obtained through a Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments (WCOG) grant.   The concept, shown below, removes the center roundabout and adjusts the access to the abutting properties to create a straight roadway cross section.

The Town is in the process of engaging an engineering firm to develop the final concept and produce the construction plans.   In addition,  with the current cost estimate exceeding $2,000,000, the town is attempting to find grant funding to offset the cost of the project’s construction.  If successful funding for engineering a design could be available in 2025, with construction to follow in subsequent years.
