Utility Maintenance Worker I (Grounds)

The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, manual labor in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments, such as but not limited to maintaining town grounds, repairing irrigation lines and operating grounds equipment.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains town grounds using such equipment as riding and manual lawn mowers, leaf blowers; waters grass, flower beds and other landscape; maintains shrubbery and trees; plants flowers; spreads seed and fertilizer; maintains and renovates town sports fields.

 2. Assists in town owned tree removal; collects fallen leaves; gathers debris; collects roadside trash; spreads gravel or stone as needed.

 3. Performs general maintenance work and daily preventative maintenance on town trucks and equipment; drives equipment to and from maintenance sites.

 4. Sets up work zones according to standards; flags traffic during road and rights-of-way maintenance.

 5. Sets up and breaks down for town special events; works at town special events as required.

 6. Performs snow and ice removal for town, as needed.

 7. Performs other duties as required.

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Flagger certification within six months of employment
  • Virginia Pesticide Applicators Certificate desired
  • Irrigation installation and maintenance experience preferred

HOURS:

 6:30am - 3:00pm
