Utility Technician I (Water)

The purpose of the position is to ensure the water quality is maintained at a high standard in support of the Water Supervisor. Employees in this classification perform skilled technical operations and maintenance work. Position is responsible for collecting water samples, conducting pressure and fire flow test, install and maintain water meters; utility locating and assist with system maintenance O&M to include supporting emergency response. Additional responsibilities include operation and maintenance of SCADA system, and related utility security alarm systems; supports development of annual water projects for the CIP; review of technical specifications as necessary to ensure compliance with current standards; and performance of research on products and equipment that are identified in the specifications. Must carry a town cell phone at all times and be available/on-call on a 24/7 basis, as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Support and assist with the water quality testing program. 

2. Performs skilled tasks; operates a variety of light-to-heavy equipment; oversees the daily maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

3. Ensure safety regulations are followed.  Conducts work inspections and safety checks; takes action to correct deficiencies; ensures safety of work environment.

4. Attends staff meetings, safety meetings and training seminars as required.

5. Will be available for on-call duties as assigned.

6. Completes work requests as generated by other departments.

7. Assist with recording all workflows, using the town’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

8. Performs snow and ice removal; plows and salts roads; engages in necessary traffic control.

9. Participates in water maintenance work, including but not limited to installing and or repairing water lines, and water line maintenance.

10. Must report to work in, and wear at all times on the job, steel-toed safety shoes of an acceptable standard, effective the first scheduled workday.  May not work without safety shoes.

11. Performs other duties as required.

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed, or normal operations are suspended.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational/technical training in water systems operation and maintenance; also supplemented by one or more years’ experience and/or training that includes water sample collections; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Experience using computers and Microsoft Office Suite
• Possession of flagging certification issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation or attain within six months of employment
• Must be able to complete competent person training for trench safety and confined space entry within six months of employment
• Valid commercial driver’s license (Class B) with acceptable record; or attain a commercial driver’s license (Class B) within 12 months of employment

 
Hours: Monday - Friday / 6:30am - 3:00pm
