Utility Maintenance Worker II (Water)

The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain the town’s sanitary sewer conveyance and water distribution systems.  Employees in this classification are responsible for operating and maintaining such vehicles and equipment as, but not limited to the town’s closed circuit TV unit (CCTV), flush truck and trailer, refuse and roll-off trucks, dump truck, rubber-tire loader, tractor, front-end loader, backhoe, bobcat, milling machine, sweeper, forklift, bush hog and snow removal equipment.  Position requires preparing and maintaining daily operations documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 1. Operates a variety of equipment for town water and sewer line repair and maintenance; maintains, repairs and transports water and sewer equipment; installs water meters, fire hydrants, drinking fountains and new water lines.

 2. Assists in inspections of mechanical or lining of sewer repairs; installs and televises sewer lines; performs routine and emergency maintenance to water and sewer lines; cleans sewer mains to ensure the unrestricted conveyance of wastewater; repairs main water line breaks; repairs and maintains fire hydrants and well buildings; repairs manholes; backfills around ground meters.

 3. Responds to water and sewer emergencies; assists with inspections of below-and-above-ground systems, and checks air quality that requires confined space entry per permit requirements.

 4. Conducts and records inflow and infiltration (I&I) inspections of the town sewer system.

 5. Maintains access to trunk lines and meter stations.

 6. Checks and services flapper valves; assists with inspections of above-and-below ground system and checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements; climbs tanks using appropriate fall protection apparatus; sets up work zones and flags traffic around work zones as required; assists other crews with confined space testing as needed.

 7. Assists marking “Miss Utility” tickets.

 8. Reads monthly meter book; maintains time and material records as applicable.

 9. Assists residents with related complaints or issues.

10. Assists with setup and breakdown of town special events; assists with snow removal and weather-related emergencies.

 11. Performs other duties as required.

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Minimum two years’ experience or training with heavy equipment operations
• Previous municipal public works experience strongly preferred
• Ability to obtain all of the following certifications within six months of employment: flagger, trench safety, confined space entry and forklift
• Valid commercial driver’s license, Class B, with ability to obtain air brakes and tanker endorsement within nine months of employment
