Comprehensive Planning The long range planning staff maintains and interprets the Comprehensive Plan and Map and oversees issues related to transportation planning, the Capital Improvement Program (CIP), demographics, the census, area master plans, and rezoning applications.
Zoning and Subdivision Services The current planning staff maintains and interprets the Subdivision and Zoning Ordinances and the Zoning Map. The Subdivision and Zoning Ordinances are chapters 70 and 78 of the Town Code. Please see the Related Links section of this page and select the Town Code option to reach these chapters.
In addition, the current planning staff oversees the review process for land development applications, such as site plans, subdivisions, special exceptions, Architectural Review Board applications, Heritage Preservation Review Board applications, Board of Zoning Appeals, land use verifications and ordinance text amendments.
Enforcement The Community Enforcement Team ensures that the regulations found within the Zoning Ordinance are adhered to throughout Herndon's residential neighborhoods and its business community protecting citizens' safety and preserving the Town's tranquility and property values. Common zoning violations include issues such as overcrowding or excessive occupancy, inoperable vehicles, illegal signs and commercial vehicles.
Community Forestry The Town's certified arborist maintains the health of the Town's trees, provides citizens with related advice and coordinates volunteer efforts related to the natural environment. In addition, the Community Forester oversees the Town's popular Farmer's Market.
Heritage Preservation The citizens of Herndon have honored the Town's history since the founding of the Town in 1879. The intervening years have been recorded in the architectural history of the Town. Herndon has several Heritage Districts, incorporating both commercial and residential structures, including the Town's 1857 train station, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Boards and Commission
The Planning Commission, Architectural Review Board, Heritage Preservation Review Board, and Board of Zoning Appeals are comprised of Town citizens committed to enhancing, preserving and protecting the Town through thoughtful review of long range planning policies and development proposal oversight.
