In addition, the current planning staff oversees the review process for land development applications, such as site plans, subdivisions, special exceptions, Architectural Review Board applications, Heritage Preservation Review Board applications, Board of Zoning Appeals, land use verifications and ordinance text amendments.

Enforcement
The Community Enforcement Team ensures that the regulations found within the Zoning Ordinance are adhered to throughout Herndon's residential neighborhoods and its business community protecting citizens' safety and preserving the Town's tranquility and property values. Common zoning violations include issues such as overcrowding or excessive occupancy, inoperable vehicles, illegal signs and commercial vehicles.

Herndon has several Heritage Districts, incorporating both commercial and residential structures, including the Town's 1857 train station, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Boards and Commission
The Planning Commission, Architectural Review Board, Heritage Preservation Review Board, and Board of Zoning Appeals are comprised of Town citizens committed to enhancing, preserving and protecting the Town through thoughtful review of long range planning policies and development proposal oversight.
