The Zoning Enforcement Division is part of the Town's Community Inspections effort and is under the supervision of the Town's Zoning Administrator who is charged with the enforcement of regulations found in the Herndon Zoning Ordinance. These regulations apply to all property within the Town of Herndon, both residential and non-residential. Community Inspectors respond to inquiries and complaints affecting neighborhoods. In an effort to assist residents with various inquiries, the Herndon in Bloom brochure was developed for the purpose of Fostering Home and Neighborhood and Upkeep for a Vibrant Community. This brochure answers the most common questions received by the Town staff and includes "Good Neighbor" Guidelines. For additional information, please view the brochure.
The listing below delineates some of the more common inquiries. To learn more about a particular item, please select from the following items:
home-based businesses;
commercial vehicle parking;
temporary uses and special events;
accessory uses and structures;
fences;
day care/child care;
portable storage units; and
roll-off dumpsters
Inquiries regarding possible violations on commercial properties are also investigated. The majority of the inquiries involve:
Businesses operating without zoning approval; and
sign permits.
If you suspect a violation, you may contact the office by e-mail: community.violations@herndon-va.gov. In an effort to obtain as much information as possible to assist in the investigation, it is helpful if the reporting party reviews and completes an Ordinance Violation Complaint form.
In addition, complaints are lodged regarding excessive occupancy or overcrowding. If you suspect such a violation, please complete an Excessive Occupancy Questionnaire. These forms may be mailed, faxed or hand-carried to the Enforcement offices located at 1481 Sterling Road. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
